Urwick Library

Date range: 19th century

Medium: Printed

Number of items: 1,500 items

The Urwick Library was formed in 1885 by Thomas Greenwood (1851-1908), the famous bibliographer-librarian, in honour of William Urwick (1826-1905), historian of Nonconformity and minister of Hatherlow Congregational Church in Romiley, Cheshire.

Although the Library was primarily intended for the congregation of Hatherlow Church, and for scholars attending its day or Sunday schools, other local residents were admitted as borrowers.

The historical value of the collection lies not so much in its wide-ranging content, as in the fact that it is one of the few 19th-century chapel libraries to have survived intact.
