Eugène Vinaver Collection

Medium: Printed

Number of items: 250 items (dispersed)

Eugène Vinaver (1899–1979) was born in St Petersburg and studied at the University of Paris, being awarded a Ph.D. for his thesis on the relationship between the French and English Arthurian romances. His interest in English literature took him to Oxford in 1921; he was lecturer (1924–28) then reader in French (1928–33). He held the chair of French language and literature at the University of Manchester from 1933 until 1966, when he became professor emeritus.

Vinaver published almost one hundred works, many of them major books, on French and English medieval literature and the French classics. His book collection, consisting of mainly 19th- and 20th-century imprints in both French and English, reflects his interest in Arthurian literature and medieval studies, together with his wider concern for European culture.
