A small collection of letters and papers of Sir Codrington Edmund Carrington (1769–1849), Chief Justice of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
After acting as a junior counsel for the East India Company in Calcutta in the 1790s, he served as Chief Justice from January 1802 to October 1805 when ill-health forced him to resign his position and return to England. He purchased an estate at Chalfont in Buckinghamshire and became a magistrate and deputy lieutenant of the county. He also represented the rotten borough of St Mawes, Cornwall, from 1826 until 1831.
The collection comprises correspondence and papers relating to his service as Chief Justice, containing much information on the legal system and affairs generally in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), and later correspondence concerning his offices and private affairs.
