The firm of James Woolley, Sons & Co. Ltd of Manchester was a significant wholesale and retail pharmaceutical firm in Manchester in the 19th and 20th centuries.

James Woolley (1811–1858) established the business in 1833, and it flourished under the management of his sons, trading as James Woolley, Sons & Co., and in 1895 it was incorporated as a limited liability company. Woolleys manufactured and sold a wide range of products, including tablets, pills and capsules of all types, surgical equipment and trusses, talcum powder, health cordials and photographic equipment.

The archive includes: financial records such as ledgers, cash books and wages books; photographs of the company’s premises and commercial vehicles; scrapbooks of pharmaceutical advertisements; property records; and published histories of the company.

A separate Woolley family archive includes the family and personal papers of various family members, including the mountaineer and sportsman Hermann Woolley.
