Books from the library of Dennis Welland (1919-2002), Professor of American Literature in the University of Manchester from 1965 to 1983, donated in 2005. Welland had a lifelong interest in the war poet Wilfred Owen (1893-1918). His influential book Wilfred Owen: A Critical Study (1960), based on his Ph.D. thesis, was the first major study of Owen’s life and work.

The collection focusses on the poetry and poets of the First World War. Alongside Owen, poets represented in individual volumes include Edmund Blunden (1896-1974) and Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967). There are numerous anthologies of war poetry, plus war novels by writers including Richard Aldington (1892-1962), Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939), Pat Barker (1943- ) and Sebastian Faulks (1953- ). Other writings include collections of letters and newspaper articles, plus biographical and critical material.
