Books from the ‘Britain in Pictures’ (BIP) series published by Collins in the 1940s. Edited by Walter James Turner (1889-1946), this pictorial social history of Britain, published mainly during the Second World War, was designed to boost morale by celebrating all aspects of British life. Topics covered include literature, history, art, science, wildlife, pastimes and people.
Copious illustrations, representing British art from medieval times to the 1940s, are accompanied by essays written by prominent authors of the day, including John Betjeman (1906-84), Graham Greene (1904-91) and George Orwell (1903-50). 126 books were published along with 7 omnibus volumes.
The Library’s collection consists mainly of first editions in dustjackets. A marked-up copy of Michael Carney’s Britain in Pictures: A History and Bibliography (London: Werner Shaw, 1995) is available.
