University of Manchester Student Ephemera Collection

Date range: 1969-1990s

Medium: Archive

The Student Ephemera Collection is a unique collection of pamphlets, leaflets, fliers and posters created by University of Manchester students. Most of the Collection dates from the period 1969-76, although there is also material from the 1980s and 1990s.

The Collection was accumulated by the Library to provide a representative sample of student literature at a period of intensified political and social activism. Although much of the content is political in nature (particularly radical politics), there are also numerous documents relating to music, theatre, religious and charitable work. The Collection provides good coverage of high-profile political campaigns during this period including: protests against the tour of the South African Springbok rugby team in 1969-70; the " political dossiers" affair (1970-1); student "occupations" , including the famous occupation of the Whitworth Hall and the South African disinvestment campaigns of the 1970s.

The Collection is an invaluable resource for the study of students' political, social and cultural activities and views during this period. It is an important example of student material culture, providing scope for studying the textual and artistic representation of ideas and beliefs within the student body, and their connections with the wider "underground" press of this era.
