Andrew Nicholson Book Collection

Date range: 1777-2009

Medium: Printed

Number of items: 568 items

Books from the library of John Andrew Lamont Nicholson (1948-2009), the leading textual scholar of the writing of Lord Byron (George Gordon Noel Byron, 6th Baron Byron (1788-1824), donated in 2010.

There are a small number of literary first editions, including a first edition, third issue of Byron’s Faustian tragedy Manfred (London: John Murray, 1817) containing a fragment in Byron’s own hand. However, the majority of the collection consists of 19th and 20th century reference material relating to Byron and his circle, along with more general histories of the period.

Of interest is a copy of Ralph Milbanke, Earl of Lovelace’s Astarte (London: Christophers, 1921) with annotations by the noted Byron scholar Sir John Charles Fox (1855-1943). Most of the collection is marked-up with extensive annotations and insertions in Nicholson’s own hand, reflecting his meticulous scholarship.
