Medium: Printed

Number of items: 1750 items

Formed by Richard Michael Robbins CBE (1915-2002), the former Managing Director (Railways) of London Transport, this collection was donated in 1998, together with the Michael Robbins Railway Collection. Best known for his lifelong love of railways, Robbins was also a historian of Middlesex. He was the author of the Middlesex volume of A New Survey of England (London: Collins, 1953), a series of historical and topographical guides to the counties of England, and was the Chairman of the Middlesex Council of the Victoria County History from 1963 to 1976. Robbins held a variety of public offices in London and Middlesex, including presidency of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, and the Society of Antiquaries, plus governorship of the Museum of London.

Covering all aspects of London’s social and political history, the majority of the collection dates from the 20th century. There are guidebooks to churches, museums, and visitor attractions; school histories; biographies and reminiscences, plus studies in antiquities, architecture, topography and natural history. There are numerous pamphlets, many of which are undated, along with a small amount of manuscript and cartographic material.
