Rupert Davies Papers

Dr Rupert Eric Davies (1909-1994) was educated at St Paul's School and Balliol College, Oxford, before training for the Methodist ministry at Wesley House, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1937 and after five years in the Bristol circuit ministry, was appointed tutor in church history at Didsbury College. From 1967 until 1973 he served as Principal of Wesley College, but later returned to circuit work and in 1976 was appointed Warden of the New Room, Bristol.

Davies served as President of the Methodist Conference in 1970, sat on numerous committees and councils, and was a prolific writer in the fields of Church history, theology and ecumenism.

The collection contains material relating to Dr Davies as an ecumenicist, educationalist, minister, writer, Church historian and advocate of Church unity. Material includes:

  • Diaries;
  • A typescript autobiography;
  • Lecture and sermon notes;
  • Correspondence;
  • Photographs;
  • Newspaper cuttings;
  • Papers relating to the presidential year 1970-1;
  • Draft and published copies of Davies's books, articles and reviews;
  • Papers of the Harborne Group;
  • Papers relating to the Church overseas, especially in Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Korea, the United States, Canada, Portugal and Burma;
  • Papers relating to Anglican/Methodist conversations, ecumenism, the World Council of Churches and the British Council of Churches.
