This small collection of works by 20th-century Cuban women writers was assembled by Professor Catherine Davies of the University’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, in connection with her book A Place in the Sun?: Women writers in twentieth-century Cuba (London: Zed Books, 1997).
The collection contains a varied selection of Cuban works from throughout the 20th century, featuring pre-revolutionary authors such as Fina García Marruz, and writers from the post-1959 socialist era, including Georgina Herrera and Excilia Saldaña.
Although the collection consists predominantly of poetry, including selections by Lina de Feria, Rafaela Chacón Nardi and Minerva Salado, a range of literary formats is represented. These include short stories (Aida Bahr, María Elena Llana); novels (Soledad Cruz Guerra, Chely Lima); plays (Xiomara Leyva Ojito, Gloria Parrado); plus several works written specifically for children. A number of copies contain inscriptions by the authors.
Professor Davies presented the collection to the Library in consideration of Mrs Rylands’s Cuban background: baptized Enriqueta Augustina Tennant, the founder of the John Rylands Library was born in Havana in 1843 to an expatriate sugar merchant.
