This collection of works by and about of the American poet, essayist, and journalist Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was assembled by Charles F. Sixsmith (1870-1954) of Anderton, near Chorley in Lancashire. It includes twenty-two different editions of Leaves of Grass and over one hundred works of criticism, many being presentation copies in limited editions. There is much material relating to the Bolton Whitman Circle of which Sixsmith was a member.
Charles E. Feinberg (1899-1988) of Detroit made important additions to the Whitman Collection.
In all there are nearly sixty separate editions and issues of Leaves of Grass and some seventy editions of other works by Whitman. Save for Whitman's early temperance novel, 'Franklin Evans; or, The Inebriate: A Tale of the Times', New World, 2.10, Extra Ser. 34 (November 1842), 1-31, the collection includes virtually every item described in Carolyn Wells and Alfred F. Goldsmith, A Concise Bibliography of the Works of Walt Whitman: With a Supplement of Fifty Books about Whitman (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1922).
The Sixsmith collection also contains works of, or relating to, the English socialist, writer and friend of Whitman, Edward Carpenter (1844-1929).
