Wilmslow Quaker Collection

This small collection of Quaker literature was donated to the John Rylands Library by the Cheshire Monthly Meeting in 2003.

The majority of the collection comes from the Wilmslow (formerly Morley) Meeting’s library, although several of the earliest volumes belonged to Stockport, Frandley (near Weaverham) and Nantwich meetings. A number of volumes bear ownership marks of individual Friends.

Among the most interesting are two books published by the female Quaker printer-bookseller, Tace Sowle (1666-1749), in 1699, which belonged to the Quaker Minister Benjamin Bangs of Stockport. Like many Friends, Bangs was subject to much persecution before the Act of Toleration in 1689. There is also a copy of Joseph Hobson's Memoirs of the Life and Convincement of that Worthy Friend Benjamin Bangs (London: Printed and sold by Luke Hinde, 1757).
