Papers of Robert Adamson (1852-1902), philosopher, Professor of Logic and Mental and Moral Philosophy 1876-1893, and Professor of Political Economy 1876-1882, at Owens College (later the University of Manchester).
As well as his work at Owens, Adamson also took a prominent role in the administration of the Victoria University, serving as secretary of the Board of Studies. Adamson was an advocate of the admission of women on equal terms with men to University. Adamson later taught at the Universities of Aberdeen and Glasgow.
This small collection of Adamson's papers comprises his student notes on philosophy, part of a typescript lecture on mental philosophy, a notebook on 17th-century English literature, and various other fragmentary pieces. The archive also includes political notebooks of a Manchester Liberal activist, Joseph Robert Lancashire, which relate to his views on the social conditions of the working classes.
Associated with this collection are transcriptions of lectures by the German logician and philosopher, Rudolf Hermann Lotze, whose ideas influenced Adamson.
