Manchester Medical Collection

The Manchester Medical Collection constitutes a remarkable, indeed unique, body of archive and printed ephemera about medicine in Manchester since the 18th century.

The collection was formed by Ernest Bosdin Leech (1875–1950), a Manchester doctor and an enthusiastic historian of medicine in his spare time. He was assisted Edward Mansfield Brockbank and his son William Brockbank, both whom were, like Leech, consultant physicians at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Leech sought to collect documents about practically every aspect of medicine in Manchester, including medical personnel, hospitals, medical schools, societies and charities, and important subjects such as nursing, public health and disease in Manchester. Currently the collection contains some 30,000 documents.

The Publications Series, MMC/1, comprises nearly 10,000 articles, reports and papers of a medical nature, written by Manchester-related medics since the 19th century. Many of the pamphlets and offprints are rare and difficult to obtain.

The Biographical Series, MMC/2, is an invaluable resource for researchers. It comprises biographical data on over 6000 medical practitioners associated with the Manchester area, covering a period from the 17th century to the present day.

The Manchester Medical Collection also contains material on the University of Manchester's medical school and medical education, medical societies and medical charities in Manchester, and documents on over sixty hospitals in Greater Manchester. There are numerous publications and documents relating to the history of public health and infectious diseases in the local area.
