The College for Women was the first institution in Greater Manchester to provide higher education for women students. Although its students did not take degrees, it enjoyed a close relationship with Owens College, Manchester, several of whose staff taught at the College. The College closed in 1883, following the decision by Owens College to admit women students to study for Victoria University degrees.
The College’s archives include: minutes of its governing committee, 1877-1883: annual reports, 1878-1883: syllabuses; and student registers recording admission and attendance of students. There is, in addition, a draft scheme for the College (1877) and a printed lecture by Herman Hagar, who taught German at the College. The archive has value for wider issues relating to the history of women's higher education in the UK.
