The North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society was founded in 1890 on the initiative of William Japp Sinclair (1846-1912), Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Owens College, Manchester. Its main objective was 'the promotion of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Medicine and Surgery', and most of its membership was drawn from the major Northern cities.
Meetings were held monthly, except in the summer, and included demonstrations of clinical specimens, discussions of case-studies, lectures and debates. As well as their educational value, the meetings had a convivial purpose, and would conclude with a dinner. Meetings were held in Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool and Sheffield by rotation, with local secretaries appointed in each of these cities.
The archive comprises the minute books of the Society’s Council and its ordinary meetings from its foundation to the present day. There are also rule books, a small number of financial records, occasional publications of the Society, including a brief history of the Society by Arthur Gemmell, and the recent Transactions of the Society (1993-2008).
