Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain Archive

Date range: 1956–2008

Medium: Archive

The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain (SAHGB) was founded in 1965 to encourage an interest in the history of architecture and to provide opportunities for the exchange and discussion of ideas in this field. The Society organises lectures, study days, overseas tours, conferences and graduate student workshops, and it awards grants towards the costs of research and publication. The Society’s principal publication is the journal Architectural History.

Material in the archive comprises:

  • Executive Committee minutes and correspondence;
  • general correspondence;
  • correspondence of individual officers;
  • correspondence and papers relating to membership;
  • proceedings of annual general meetings and annual conferences;
  • papers relating to study tours and lectures;
  • press cuttings, newsletters;
  • miscellaneous printed and promotional material.

The archive's principal value lies in its revealing the internal workings, organization and priorities of the SAHGB. It contains very little information on individual architects or on architectural history itself.
