William Grigor McClelland (1922-2013) was a businessman, who played an important role in the development of management education in the UK.

McClelland spent his early career working at the family firm, Laws Stores, which owned supermarkets in north-east England. He was then a management fellow at Balliol College, Oxford, before being appointed the first director of the Manchester Business School (MBS) in 1965. Under his leadership, MBS became noted for its innovative approach to management education. McClelland also established the Journal of Management Studies, which became a leading journal in its field.

Influenced by his Quaker background, McClelland was an eloquent exponent of corporate social responsibility and business ethics, and was active in charitable bodies and pressure groups which tackled social deprivation.

McClelland's papers relate primarily to his work in management education and economics, as well as his social activism and philanthropy. They include unpublished manuscripts and lectures from his periods at Oxford and Manchester, including his research on retailing, distribution and management accountancy, his papers as a member of the Oxford Economists’ Research Group and his MBS Director's files.
