Work Experience

The University of Manchester Library offers a number of unpaid work experience placements throughout the year, giving students an insight into working at a very busy academic library.

The work experience placements we have available for 2019 are below.  

If you are interested in any of our work experience placements please complete the application form and email it to Charlotte Nunn by the specified date of that work experience.

As part of the University's commitment to widening participation we are especially interested in applications from year 10 students from local schools.

Administrative Assistant (Learning Development)

Location: The Alan Gilbert Learning Commons - AGLC, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL

Duration: 1 week.

Placement suitable for: A year 10 student.

Placement date:  June or July 2019

Placement times: 10am – 4pm with 1 hour break for lunch (normally 1-2pm).

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve working with computers.

Further information about the work experience placement: The Library's Learning Development Team aims to support the success of our students through every stage of their learning experience by providing accessible, proactive and innovative services and learning resources, enhanced by positive staff-student interactions. On this placement you will have the chance to attend academic skills workshops, interact with students, work with staff in an office environment and contribute to the day to day running of the My Learning Essentials Programme and our Widening Participation work with local schools. At the end of the placement, you will use your experience to complete a reflective report to increase your employability for future job applications

Shelving & Stock Management Assistant (Content, Collections and Discovery)

Location: Main Library (Burlington Street, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL)

Duration: 1 week

Placement suitable for: A year 10 or year 12 student

Placement date: May or June 2019

Placement times: Start time 9.30am or 10.00am until 4.00pm or 4.30pm.

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve manual handling (moving trolleys and shelving books) and working with computers.

Further information about the work experience placement: This work experience placement will involve helping with the weeding, moving, packing, cleaning, shelving, shelf-checking and relabeling of book stock. You will also check catalogue records for some of the books and carry out other tasks associated with stock projects. This work experience placement is suitable for someone who possesses the ability to handle, move and shelve books using appropriate aids (e.g. trolleys, lift).

The following work experience placements for 2019 have now been allocated.

Content, Collections & Discovery Assistant (Content, Collections and Discovery)

Location: Joule Library (Sackville Street Building, Manchester M13 9PL).

Duration: 1 week.

Placement suitable for: Anyone interested in this type of role including year 10 or year 12 students.

Placement date: February - July 2019.

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve manual handling and working with computers.

Further information about the work experience placement: This work experience placement will include an overview of academic library purchasing, cataloguing, book and stock organisation and collection preservation.  

There is an expectation that the candidate would undertake duties related to manual handling.

Customer Services Assistant (Customer Services)

Location:  Across various library sites

Duration: 1 week.

Placement suitable for: Suitable for a year 10 or year 12 student.

Placement date:  February, March, June, July or August 2019.

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve manual handling and working with computers.

Further information about the work experience placement: The person who secures this work experience placement will be involved with all tasks associated with the delivery of frontline customer support, including face to face and virtual enquries and associated administrative tasks.

The person offered the placement will be selected from all those received by the date specified above but they will need to attend a pre-placement interview before the placement is offered.

Finance/Planning Assistant (Planning and Professional Services)

Location: Main Library (Burlington Street, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL).

Duration: 1 week.

Placement suitable for: Suitable for a year 10 student, year 12 student or a library student

Placement date: February to May 2019.

Business Planning

The Business Planning team work with project managers to help them manage projects effectively. This opportunity is to work alongside them seeing how projects work, learn about project management and gain an understanding of some of the projects the Library has. The practical work undertaken within the team will depend on the time of year but will typically involve attending project meetings, reviewing the progress of projects, developing communications for all Library Staff and producing summaries of projects for the Library Leadership Team.

Finance

The Library Finance Team is responsible for the processing of a wide range of financial transactions ensuring compliance with University Financial Regulations. We work with and support all areas of the Library. Tasks that will be covered are purchasing, invoice processing, conference and travel bookings, cash reconciliations and expenses. There will also be the opportunity to get an overview of Management Accounts and financial reporting.

Library Systems (Digital Technologies and Services)

Location: Main Library (Burlington Street, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL).

Duration: 1 week.

Placement suitable for: Year 10 student, year 12 student or library student (before, during or after your library course).

Placement date: Any time (preferable not vacation period).

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve working with computers.

Further information about the work experience placement: You will gain experience from shadowing different members of the Library Systems team and will include General Information Technology (IT) support, Library Systems Management and the eResources helpdesk. There will also be some small self-contained project work which would vary depending on the time of year but may include testing the usability of one of our system interfaces. This work experience placement is suitable for someone who is interested in working in IT either in a library setting or elsewhere.

Marketing Assistant (Marketing and Communications)

Location: Main Library (Burlington Street, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL)

Duration: 1 week

Placement suitable for: Year 10 or year 12 student

Placement date: March - May 2019

Placement times: 10am - 4pm 

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve working with computers

Further information about the work experience placement: This work experience placement will involve assisting staff in the University Library's Marketing and Communications department. Duties may include writing press releases, writing for social media and evaluating marketing materials. There may be an opportunity to work on video, web and graphic design. You will be guided through the many tasks of the marketing team from management to procurement and planning.  You will be mentored on a one to one basis by a member of the University Library staff, as well as spending time with various members of the team. You may be given a mini marketing campaign to support for the week and you will work on your CV during work time and develop a PowerPoint presentation to give to the team at the end of the week outling what you have learned.

This work experience placement would be suitable for someone interested in a career in marketing.

Software Developer (Digital Technologies and Services)

Placement role: Software Developer (Digital Technologies and Services).

Location: Main Library (Burlington Street, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL).

Duration: 1 week.

Placement suitable for: Year 10 student or year 12 student.

Placement date: Please note that this placement is not available during August, September, December or during school holidays.

Risk Assessment: This placement will involve working with computers.

Further information about the work experience placement: Join our experienced software development team to learn about developing web applications using Java, Java Script, JQuery, CSS, HTML, XML and XSLT.
