Critical analysis: generating questions using primary sources
Primary sources are the building blocks of knowledge; they are the raw data from which scholars draw and develop ideas. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to work with artefacts from the University of Manchester's world-leading Special Collections. It will equip you with strategies for critically evaluating and analysing a range of primary sources including rare books, letters, photographs and maps whether for your own research or for understanding wider society.
You will be encouraged to think critically about primary sources to determine their accuracy and limitations and to consider how they can enhance and extend your own learning. The skills covered are transferable and can be applied to any learning situation involving evaluation, analysis and interpretation of data therefore, this workshop will be of interest to those developing their own research project or more widely, those interested in how information is analysed, evaluated and interpreted.
Do you struggle replicating a search in a different database? This session will show participants how to replicate a search in four database platforms. This session will raise awareness of some of the search tools useful in replicating searches. This session will run for 90 minutes and there will be 30 minutes at the end for further questions.
This session is a workshop to help you think about the basics when searching for information relating to an assignment topic. You will learn a number of different steps which can be taken in order to help refine your results and pinpoint relevant information and resources as quickly as possible. Interactive exercises will give you practical experience of structuring a comprehensive search and help you to develop your own strategies for searching by working through common difficulties.
What makes a journal article credible
Are you unsure what journal articles are? Have you had some feedback to indicate that you should be including better quality literature in your assignments? Then this workshop is for you. In this workshop you will determine the key components of a journal article, building a list of criteria which will then enable you to effectively assess the credibility of an article. Applying this strategy to your University work will add strength to your arguments.
