Critical reading: getting the most out of your reading

In this workshop, you will go over key skills for effective critical reading. You will learn and practise techniques to help you identify key points and main ideas and gain an understanding about what is required to read critically. There will also be opportunities to discuss strategies for making connections between different articles, journals or other materials in order to aid understanding. Feel free to bring your own reading assignments to use during the session.
Academic writing: structuring for effective essays
This workshop will focus on the skills and techniques needed to plan, structure and write an effective essay. During the workshop you will discover different techniques you can use to structure each of the key sections within an essay. You will participate in a number of activities that will help you to develop your academic writing skills and write more efficiently and effectively.
Proofreading: the final stage before submission
Do you find yourself losing marks for referencing, spelling or grammar? This session will highlight how proofreading a written piece of work to a high standard will improve your marks and increase your academic success. You will work with others to define the term proofreading and understand its place in the process of academic writing. Finally, you will get the chance to put what you have learnt into practice, working together as a group to effectively proofread a sample piece of work.
Academic writing: referencing in your writing
This workshop will focus on effectively referencing sources in your writing. We will look at different ways to incorporate sources including: quotation, summarising and citation. We will also discuss what is appropriate for each method and how to smoothly integrate references into your own writing while simultaneously giving clarity to your own opinion and voice.
