Guidelines for transcription permission requests

Requests to publish transcripts or textual extracts of items from our collections should be sent to our Imaging email address: uml.chicc@manchester.ac.uk. They will be forwarded to the curator responsible for the material in question, who will respond, usually within a few days.

Permission is not required to:

  • Reproduce material in a work submitted towards an academic qualification only;
  • Publish short quotations or passages from documents, provided a full citation of the source is given.

In all other cases, you will need to obtain permission to publish transcripts or extracts, both from the Library and from the current copyright holder.

We will not normally withhold permission to publish, unless we believe that publication may contravene UK law, may breach the terms of any agreement by which we hold the material, or may cause reputational damage to The University of Manchester. We reserve the right to levy a publication fee, in the case of substantial transcripts or extracts in commercial publications.

If an item is in copyright, it is your responsibility to obtain permission from the current copyright holder. Under UK copyright law, most unpublished manuscript material remains in copyright until 2039.

You must include the credit line in your publication, "Courtesy of The University of Manchester", as well as the full citation of the material. For example: "Walter Crane Archive, WCA/2/1/1/1, John Rylands Library, The University of Manchester. Courtesy of The University of Manchester."
