Research data management in Biology, Medicine and Health

Tue 6 Mar 2018, 14:00 - 16:00

Have you ever had problems finding the latest version of a file, or discovered a file name you did not understand?

Researchers collect, receive and manage research data in many forms, ranging from measurements and models to videos and simulations. Managing your data can be complex, but a little planning at the beginning can help you save time, increase your impact and work more effectively.

This workshop will introduce:

Effective strategies for storing, backing up and organising your files

Methods for working collaboratively on your data

Writing a data management plan

Funder requirements for managing and sharing data

You are encouraged to bring an electronic device to this session.

Postgraduate Research: Understanding What to Expect

Thu 22 Mar 2018, 09:45 - 11:15

This workshop will introduce you to the key stages postgraduate researchers undergo in respect to a large research project. The objective is to illustrate the common challenges faced at the start of the project, as you progress with your writing, and once you reach the final stages of your work. The workshop will present postgraduate study as a process that can be universalized but has personal impact and you will work with others (who are interested in or currently engaged in postgraduate study) to map the relevant support available to you. The workshop presents an opportunity for you to connect with others in the postgraduate community, it will showcase the wealth of support and resources you might access and it presents an opportunity to express any concerns you may have about making and managing this transition.

Who's talking about your research online?

Tue 8 May 2018, 12:00 - 13:00

A new way to track who’s talking about your research

Researchers are increasingly required to demonstrate the impact that their research is having beyond traditional academia. The emerging area of altmetrics offers new and powerful ways to track and report on the online attention of research.

This session will provide an overview of the tools and support that the Library provides to University of Manchester researchers in this new area of scholarly communications.

During this session we will consider the following:

How are altmetrics being used by publishers, funders and research institutions?

How can I find out my own altmetric data?

How can I benefit from altmetric data?
