About the events

Cartographic Tales of the City: Manchester and Mapping

Historic Reading Room
Run extended to 28 March 2010

Mapping Manchester explores the growth of the city, road networks and public transport, Manchester as the industrial powerhouse of the 19th Century, the social geography of housing, changing moralities and leisure mapping such as plans of Belle Vue - arguably the world's first theme park.

On display are maps, plans and photographs of Manchester published over the last 250 years.

From February, visitors can see a full scale reproduction of the Russian map of central Manchester which received a lot of press coverage in August 2009.

Heroes and Kings: The Shahnama of Ferdowsi

Christie Gallery
18 February 2010 to 27 June 2010

The Shahnama, or Book of Kings, is an epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi. The national epic of Iran, it tells the mythical and historical past of the Persian empire from the creation of the world up until the Arab conquest in the 7th Century.

Heroes and Kings offers a rare opportunity to see the exciting and beautiful Shanameh manuscripts, some of which are more than 500 years old.

The exhibition explores the language, art, history and mythology of the Shahnama through a series of themed displays.
