The University of Manchester Library

Maps and Atlases

The Map Collection, together with related monographs, atlases and gazetteers, and cartography textbooks, is now based in the Purple Ground area of the Main Library.

Access is available to all members of the University; external visitors may also view items in the collection but retrievals and enquiries are by appointment only.

This is primarily a Reference Collection, but some folded maps may be borrowed for 7 days.  Photocopying/scanning from maps is subject to Copyright legislation.

The collection offers an extensive range of topographic and thematic mapping for the UK, with a strong emphasis on the North West, as well as wide-ranging coverage for the rest of the World.

Electronic resources include DIGIMAP, which delivers downloadable Ordnance Survey and Geological Survey maps and map data online. This service is only available to current students and staff of the University of Manchester.

An online map collection is now available from The University of Manchester Library's Image Collections (LUNA).

Some of the printed map sheets held can be identified by searching the Library Catalogue, using the Map Collection drop-down menu; otherwise it is best to contact the map specialist staff to check on availability:
