The University of Manchester Library

Map collection

The University Map Collection, together with related monographs, atlases and gazetteers, and cartography textbooks, is located in the Purple Ground area of the Main Library.

The collection offers an extensive range of topographic and thematic mapping for the UK, with a strong emphasis on the North West, as well as wide-ranging coverage for the rest of the World.

Many of the printed map sheets held can be identified by using Library Search; limiting your search to the library catalogue and the map collection field in the advanced search option will help to refine your results.

The folded map collection is available to browse in the Purple Ground area of the Main Library and includes some items which are available for loan.  Items from the flat map collection must be retrieved by map specialist staff by prior appointment.

Electronic resources include DIGIMAP, which delivers downloadable Ordnance Survey and Geological Survey maps and map data online. This service is only available to current students and staff of the University of Manchester.

An online map collection is now available from The University of Manchester Library's Image Collections (LUNA).
