Garrett Wellesley (1735-81)

Garrett Wellesley, Earl of Mornington, was father to the 1st Duke of Wellington and the Marquis Wellesley and was possibly a distant cousin of the Wesleys. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Wellesley and Earl of Mornington in 1760. He was famous for his musical talents, which attracted the attention of King George III. He enjoyed a friendly correspondence with Charles Wesley for several years and showed great interest in the musical careers of Charles junior and his brother Samuel.
