George William Shephard (1874-1956)

George William Shephard was born in Bristol of Methodist Free Church parentage. He entered the ministry in 1895 and served as a missionary in China from 1898 to 1936. In 1913 he was appointed Chairman of the Ningpo District and later moved to Shanghai to become General Secretary for the British and Foreign Bible Society. In addition to directing distribution of bibles over a vast area, he edited the Journal of the North China Royal Asiatic Society for a short while and also served as Chairman of the Education Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Council.

In 1936 he moved to Australia and for a brief period was Commonwealth Secretary of the B.F.B.S. before retiring to England in 1937.
