Anthony Shepherd (1721-96)
Anthony Shepherd was born in Westmoreland and graduated from Cambridge in 1741. After taking Holy Orders, he held a long succession of livings and devoted himself to an intensive study of astronomy. He was elected Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge in 1760 and published extensively on the subject.
Shepherd was appointed Canon of Windsor in 1777 and also held the position of Master of Mechanics to King George III. Charles Wesley junior benefitted from Shepherd's interest in music and his connections at the Royal Court.
