Edward Oakes (1770-1838)

Edward Oakes was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire. He was educated by the evangelical Anglican minister David Simpson and was converted at the age of fourteen after hearing a sermon by the Wesleyan minister Joseph Benson. Oakes became a local preacher at the age of eighteen.

Oakes joined the Wesleyan itinerancy in 1814 and exercised an active circuit ministry in England until severe asthma forced him into superannuation in 1834.
