George Stainton Marris (1885-1955)

George Stainton Marris was born in Oxford, a son of the Wesleyan minister George Marris. He was educated at Owen's College Manchester and trained for the ministry at Handsworth. Marris served as a missionary in the Hyderabad and Mysore districts of India from 1907 to 1932, for the last ten years of which he was Professor of New Testament and Theology at the United Theological College in Bangalore.

Marris returned to England because of a break-down in his wife's health and served as a circuit minister until retirement in 1947. He had been nominated for the Chair of Systematic Theology at Handsworth in 1939 but the outbreak of war prevented the appointment from being made.
