Christian Ignatius Latrobe (1758-1836)

Christian Ignatius Latrobe was born in Fulneck, Yorkshire, the eldest son of the Moravian minister Benjamin Latrobe. Educated in Germany, he was ordained into the Moravian Church upon his return to England. In 1787 he became secretary of the Society for the Furtherance of the Gospel and succeeded James Hutton in 1795 as secretary of the Moravian Church in England.

Devoted to the cause of overseas missions, Latrobe made a highly successful visit to South Africa in 1816 which led to the expansion of the Moravian mission there.

Latrobe was a talented musician and composed a large number of anthems and choral works.
