John Hartley (1819-96)

John Hartley was born in Leeds,Yorkshire. He trained for the Wesleyan ministry for three years at Hoxton Theological Institute and commenced circuit work in 1841.

His circuit ministry lasted for forty years, with one interruption of a year [1862] due to ill health.

In 1881 he was appointed the first governor of the Handsworth branch of the Theological Institute.

After his retirement in 1892 he moved to Leeds where he spent the last years of his life.
