Martha Hall (1707-91)

Martha Hall was sister to John and Charles Wesley.

She was married in 1735 to the clergyman Westley Hall, a close friend and associate of her brothers.

The marriage after a promising start proved disastrous and the two eventually separated. She moved to London where she was a member of Dr Samuel Johnson's circle.

In her later years she was particularly close to her niece Sally.

She died in July 1791 having outlived her brothers and sisters and was buried alongide John Wesley at City Road Chapel.

She was known to her family and friends by the nickname Patty
