Erasmus was an Episcopus Vagans (lit. Itinerant Bishop), supposedly Bishop of Arcadia in Crete. He was persuaded by John Wesley to ordain the itinerant preacher John Jones to help administer the Sacraments. This was resented by Charles Wesley among others and was used by the opponents of Methodism to attack the movement.
