John Bowers (1796-1866)

John Bowers was born in Chester. He was raised in the Church of England but was converted under Methodist influence. Bowers was appointed a probationary minister at the age of seventeen and exercised an active circuit ministry until 1843. Bowers was a brilliant preacher and educator. Largely self-taught, he was appointed House Governor at Didsbury College in 1843 and occupied that position until retirement to Southport in 1862. He was elected President of Conference in 1858.
