Joseph Agar Beet (1840-1924)

Joseph Agar Beet was born at Sheffield in Yorkshire. He was educated locally at Wesley College and began to preach at an early age. He commenced training for the ministry at Richmond in 1864 and subsequently spent twenty years as a circuit minister. In his spare time, Beet continued his studies in New Testament Greek and published a widely praised Commentary on St Paul's Epistle to Romans. In 1885 he was appointed Theological Tutor at Richmond College and remained in the town after his superannuation in 1905.

Beet published widely in the field of Biblical studies, particularly the writings of St Paul, on which he published many commentaries.
