E. Mitford Abraham Windmills and Watermills Collection
Date range: c.1900–52.
Edward Mitford Abraham (1883–1959), a distinguished Quaker from Ulverston in Lancashire, began to photograph and document surviving windmills and watermills in around 1900, at a time when they were fast disappearing.
He amassed a remarkable collection of forty-seven albums containing over 1,200 views of the mills he visited during the first half of the twentieth century, chiefly in Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Cumberland, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Westmorland and Yorkshire.
There are also negatives, cuttings from newspapers and periodicals, and notes on the location, history, construction and condition of many mills.
