Joseph Roberts (1795-1849)
Joseph Roberts entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1818 when he was sent as a missionary to Ceylon. After fourteen years overseas, he returned to England where he laboured as a circuit minister. In 1842 he was sent again to India as General Superintendent of the Madras mission. His death occurred in Madras after a long period of ill health.
Roberts published Oriental Illustrations of the Sacred Scriptures in 1833 and also executed some translations from the Tamil language, which were published by the Oriental Translation Society of London.
