Matthew Prior (1664-1721)
Matthew Prior was born in Dorset and was educated at Westminster School, where he attracted considerable attention and patronage for his ability to translate Latin poetry into English verse. He graduated from Cambridge in 1686 and entered the diplomatic service, while writing poetry designed to win aristocratic and royal patronage.
He filled several diplomatic positions, culminating in his appointment as a plenipotentiary during the Utrecht peace conference in 1712.
His three volume Solomon on the Vanity of the World was much admired by the Wesleys.
