Dr Joseph Priestley (1733-1804)

Dr Joseph Priestley had a major influence on politics, religion, and science in eighteenth century Europe and North America. One of the discoverers of oxygen, he helped to lay the foundations of modern chemistry. As a theologian his views on spiritual autonomy had a lasting impact on Unitarianism, while his ardent advocacy of freedom of speech and democracy, helped to shape political thinking especially in the United States.

His views on theology aroused the opposition of the Wesleys.
