John Meriton (1698-1753)

John Meriton was born in Boughton, Norfolk, son of an Anglican clergyman. He was educated locally and at Caius College, Cambridge.

He was ordained in 1723 and served as a curate in East Anglia before experiencing an evangelical conversion under the influence of John Wesley and George Whitefield.

Meriton spent some time in the Isle of Man but left in the face of persecution. He accompanied the Wesley brothers on many preaching tours and attended the first conference of 1744.

In his later years, Meriton drifted away from the Methodists.
