Robert Kirkham (c.1708-1767)
Robert Kirkham was born in Stanton, Gloucestershire, the son of Lionel Kirkham, Rector of Stanton and Snowshill. He became acquainted with the Wesleys while at Oxford University and according to John Wesley's later recollection, was one of the original members of the Holy Club. The Wesley brothers were regular visitors to the Kirkham family home and Robert's sisters Sarah and Mary Elizabeth were also close friends of John and Charles, the former was termed Varanese in correspondence.
In 1731 Kirkham left Oxford and took up a curacy in his uncle's parish of Stanway, Gloucestershire. He took over his father's benefice of Stanton and Snowshill between 1739 and 1766.
