Ernest F. Gedye (1869-1922)

Ernest F. Gedye was born in Bristol. He was educated at the Leys School and St John's College Cambridge.

Gedye trained for the Wesleyan ministry at Richmond College and was appointed to the Chinese Wuchang District in 1892. Gedye served for over twenty years as the headmaster of Wesley College in the city of Wuchang overseeing its development into a modern well-equipped school.

During World War 1 he went back to England and spent some time as a circuit minister before working with Chinese labour battalions in France.

He returned to Wuchang at the end of the war to take up evangelistic work in the Hanyang and Hanchuan Circuits.

He remained in the active work despite declining health until his death which followed a short illness after his return from a preaching tour.

His son Alfred John Gedye (1898-1969) also served as a missionary in China and as Warden of the New Room in Bristol.
