John Coates (1783-1860)

John Coates was born at Iron-Acton in Gloucestershire. He was converted at a young age and entered the Wesleyan itinerancy in 1806 on the recommendation of the Downend circuit. With the exception of one year (1807) spent out of the active ministry because of poor health, Coates exercised an active ministry in the South and South-West of England until superannuation in 1850. Coates spent his retirement in Swansea and died following a long period of ill health on February 8th 1860.
