John Butler (fl.1820)
John Butler was born in London and trained as a probationary missionary under Reverend John Bishop of Paddington. He was ordained deacon in 1818 and towards the end of that year travelled to New Zealand as the first Anglican missionary to that country. His son Samuel accompanied Butler as a lay missionary.
Butler returned to England in 1823 and disappeared from the historical record, although evidence from the papers of Mary Fletcher indicates that he took a parish in Shropshire.
