John H. Bumby (1808-40)

John H. Bumby was born at Thirsk in Yorkshire into a religious family. He was converted at the age of fifteen and became a local preacher. Bumby entered the itinerancy in 1830 and worked as a circuit minister until 1838 when he offered himself for missionary work in New Zealand. Bumby arrived at his station in March 1839 and was drowned on June 26 1840 when his canoe overturned in the Bay of Thames. He was the first New Zealand missionary to lose his life.
