Walt Whitman Book Collection

400 items.

The Charles F. Sixsmith collection of the works of Walt Whitman includes 22 different editions of Leaves of Grass and over 100 works of criticism, many being presentation copies in limited editions.

There is much material relating to the Bolton Whitman Circle of which Sixsmith was a member.

Charles E. Feinberg of Detroit made important additions to the Whitman Collection.

In all there are nearly 60 separate editions and issues of Leaves of Grass and some 70 editions of other works by Whitman. Save for the early temperance novel Franklin Evans; or, The Inebriate (1842), virtually every item described by Wells and Goldsmith is available.

The Sixsmith collection also contains works of, or relating to, the English socialist, writer and friend of Whitman, Edward Carpenter.
