Norman Nicholson Book Collection

700 items.

The Library holds approximately 700 books from the personal library of the Cumbrian poet Norman Nicholson (1914-1987), who spent almost his entire life in the small town of Millom.

These are mainly first editions, signed and containing enclosures from the authors, and annotated by Nicholson.

The collection contains an almost complete set of 20th-century poets including T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Ted Hughes, Thom Gunn, Sylvia Plath, John Betjeman, Dylan Thomas, R.S. Thomas and Philip Larkin, and the presses represented include Faber & Faber, Marvell, Carcanet, Asphodel, Bloodaxe and Enitharmon.

A collection of some 35 first and early editions of Nicholson's own writings includes five volumes signed by the author.
